What To Expect

Expect to do your research. Adopting a rescue dog involves several choices.

You are embarking on a journey which will bring myriad of experiences. It will be more rewarding than you can imagine.

a man on a bench speaks into his dog's earIt is tempting to take home the first little Marley-like puppy you see. But if you stop and do the research along with some self-reflection before meeting any dogs, you will create a perfect environment for an uber-successful adoption.

Be honest about your energy level. How much physical energy do you have to put toward a dog’s daily exercise? How much mental energy do you have to offer the leadership and discipline needed by all dogs? Are you up to providing the mental challenge dogs like German Shepherds crave? Do you have time to take your Border Collie mix rollerblading and then to agility class?

The answers to the above questions are not meant to cast judgement on how you live your life. However, the decision to care for another living being who will depend completely upon you and who has already endured any amount of hardship, should not be made lightly. It is up to you to ensure the dog you take home never has to go back to being homeless. Ever.

But remember, dogs who are returned to shelters or rescue groups are viewed by potential adopters as being less desirable because they believe it must be the dog’s fault for being returned.
